Golden Globes Flashback: Woody Harrelson 1997

Woody Harrelson has never been considered a style icon, but when he had his tuxedo for the 1997 Golden Globes manufactured out of hemp by Armani, he was something of a fashion pioneer.

After years on Cheers, Harrelson established himself as a film actor with White Men Can't Jump in 1992. Four years later, he received his first Golden Globe nomination for The People vs. Larry Flynt, for which he also received an Oscar nomination.

Harrelson makes a stamp on his first Globes red carpet by showing up in all-white tuxedo made entirely from hemp, which he speculates may be the first of that variety. With his collar lifted and a scarf around his neck in lieu of a tie, he is complimented by ET's former correspondent Lisa Canning for his unique look.

"I've never been accused of being fashionable before, so this is a big night for me," the then-35-year-old actor says.

Draped in his all-hemp attire, one might think that he has forgotten why he is on the red carpet considering his loose demeanor; however Harrelson explains his nonchalant attitude as a premature surrender of defeat to the other men in his category (Geoffrey Rush, Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes).

"Since I'm anticipating [on] losing, there's nothing to be nervous about," he says with a grin. "It'll be alright."

His premonition proved correct that year, as he wasn't given the opportunity to show off his hemp tux while making his acceptance speech at the podium.

He was nominated over a decade later for another Golden Globe for The Messenger, but he didn't receive the award that year either. However, he did wear a hemp suit to the Oscars for his nomination for The Messenger.

Harrelson is nominated for another Golden Globe this year for the TV film Game Change. While it's unclear if he'll win the award, we're a little more certain as to what "fabric" his tux will be comprised of.

You could say we got wind of it.

WWE’s John Cena to replace Fred Flintstone on Pebbles boxes

Any athlete can grace a Wheaties box, but who is big enough to bump the iconic Fred Flintstone from the cover of Fruity Pebbles?

John Cena, that’s who.

The WWE Superstar is replacing Fred Flintstone for a limited time on the popular Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles cereals. Cena is not totally suplexing the Flintstones off the cover of the box as Bamm-Bamm will also grace both covers with the 10-time WWE Champion.

"It's been a life-long dream to be on a cereal box and I'm proud to represent WWE as part of our partnership with Post," Cena said in a statement. "It's an incredible honor to be recognized by Post, and I'm looking forward to joining millions of families at their breakfast table across the country."

Cena landing on the cover of the popular Post cereal is a result of the WWE’s partnership with the cereal company, which came about by chance.

In January 2012, during a promotional spot on WWE Monday Night Raw, fellow Superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson called out Cena.

“Enjoy your Fruity Pebbles, you Yabba Dabba b---h!” The Rock famously quipped.

The two companies joined forces in a promotional partnership shortly after, prompting The Rock to tease Cena once again.

“I assume my royalty check for this is in the mail #YoureWelcomeJohn,” The Rock tweeted.

In addition to the cereal box covers, the companies are partnering with an online game that will give fans the chance to enter a contest to win a VIP experience for Wrestlemania 30 in 2014 and will produce five million boxes featuring a photo app that allows fans to put themselves in a picture with Cena.

“John Cena is definitely a favorite celebrity among many of our Pebbles Cereal fans,” Sharon Pupel, Director of Marketing for Pebbles said in a statement. “We’re looking forward to engaging with our fans in 2013 at premiere WWE events.”

Cena appeals to a mostly younger demographic and is the leading face behind the WWE’s push to become a more family-friendly product.

“At WWE, we pride ourselves on delivering family-friendly entertainment and look forward to activating our partnership with Post even further at key WWE events later this year,” Andrew Judelson, Executive Vice President, Sales and Partnership Marketing, WWE, said.

Boxes featuring Cena are in stores now.

Miami-Dade advisory group to consider local elections fixes

The advisory group tasked with figuring out how to improve Miami-Dade elections will spend Monday morning analyzing a county report outlining problems at the November polls.

Miami-Dade Elections Supervisor Penelope Townsley and her department issued an “after-action” report last month listing numerous shortcomings, including a lack of electronic voter check-in equipment, a shortage of temporary workers and a last-minute surge in absentee ballots.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s advisory group had been scheduled to delve into the report before the holidays, but that meeting was delayed because Townsley was ill and out of the office.

The 13-member group has already made several recommendations to state lawmakers to tweak Florida elections laws, including reinstating early voting the Sunday before Election Day and allowing counties to open early-voting sites in locations other than elections offices, city halls and public libraries. County commissioners agreed last month to make those requests part of the legislative package Miami-Dade lobbyists will push for when the annual legislative session begins in March in Tallahassee.

Monday’s meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. on the 18th floor of the Stephen P. Clark Government Center, 111 NW First St.

Alcatel One Touch readies U.S. invasion with world’s thinnest smartphone and a colorful 5-inch phablet

TCL Communication’s (2618) Alcatel One Touch brand is ostensibly unknown in the United States, but the company is looking to make a name for itself at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. Alcatel One Touch has a number of new devices debuting at CES 2013 and to start things off, the China-based firm has unveiled a trio of intriguing new Android phones.

[More from BGR: ‘iPhone 5S’ to reportedly launch by June with multiple color options and two different display sizes]

While the show doesn’t officially begin until Tuesday, Alcatel One Touch got an early start on Monday — likely in order to ensure that it can lay claim to “the world’s thinnest smartphone” for at least a few hours.

[More from BGR: Next-generation LTE chips to reduce power consumption by 50%]

The first of three smartphones debuting at CES 2013 is the One Touch Idol Ultra, a sleek Android-powered handset that is just 6.45 millimeters thick. To put that dimension in perspective, the phone is 15% thinner than Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 5.

Other notable specs include a 4.7-inch HD AMOLED display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera, 1GB of RAM and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Next up is the One Touch Idol, an entry-level version of the Idol Ultra. Measuring a slightly thicker 8.15 millimeters, the One Touch Idol includes a 4.7-inch qHD IPS display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera, 512MB of RAM and the same Jelly Bean OS as the Ultra model.

Finally, Alcatel One Touch has unveiled its first entry into the “phablet” market with the One Touch Scribe HD. This stylus-ready device features a 5-inch HD IPS display, the 1.2GHz quad-core MediaTek MT6589 chipset, an 8-megapixel camera, 1GB of RAM, a microSD slot and Android 4.1. The One Touch Scribe HD also comes in a variety of colors including black, white, red and yellow.

Each of the three smartphones Alcatel One Touch debuted on Monday will launch in China later this month. The One Touch Scribe HD will then be released in the U.S. some time in the second quarter for a surprisingly affordable $ 397 before taxes and subsidies, and both the One Touch Idol and One Touch Idol Ultra will launch at a later point in time. The latter will cost $ 444 before taxes and subsidies, while pricing for the One Touch Idol has not yet been announced.

No carrier partners have been revealed at this point in the U.S. or in China.

Julianne Hough, Josh Duhamel Talk 'Safe Haven'

Julianne Hough pairs up with Josh Duhamel for the romantic thriller Safe Haven. While her co-star Cobie Smulders assessed the onscreen pair's chemistry as "fiery," ET wanted to know what her romance is like with her real-life boyfriend Ryan Seacrest. "Fiery" wasn't Hough's word of choice, but she did gush about her man.

"Ryan is the most romantic person I've ever met," she praised on the film's set in North Carolina. "[He's] very thoughtful and very generous...Things that you wouldn't think a guy would even pick up on he's already done five steps ago."

RELATED: Hough: I'm 20 Pounds Heavier Since Dating Seacrest

Hough went on to describe some of the thoughtful things that Seacrest does for her, including sending her mementos when the two are apart. The 24-year-old multitalented star also had high praises for her onscreen love interest.

"Josh is amazing to work with," Hough lauded of Duhamel. "He's definitely very focused when we're doing a scene, especially if it's something big...He's just a good guy and really fun."

Although the two are merely onscreen lovers, Duhamel, who is married to Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie, shares the same mindset of Hough's boyfriend about what keeps a relationship strong.

"I think the secret [to a lasting relationship] is just doing little things and just being thoughtful and just making sure they're being thought about," the Transformers actor said. "It's not so much about the big, grand gestures as it is about the little things."

Safe Haven
is yet another film adaptation of a novel by Nicholas Sparks, who also wrote A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, and Dear John, which were all made into films in addition to four more of his love-story books.

Although the theme of love is not lost in the upcoming film, there is an added element of suspense in this one, which Duhamel extracted as a key element as to why he joined the film.

"I love the story...I've always wanted to do one of these movies. The Nicholas Sparks movies are something that I'm actually a big fan of," he said. "If I was going to do one and if I had an opportunity to do one, I wanted it to be a little bit different...and this is a movie that, I think, is going to surprise people in that it's...romantic but it's more of a thriller, suspenseful, a little bit scarier movie than the other ones."

Safe Haven
is in theaters February 14.

Billionaire Phillip Frost an ‘entrepreneur’s entrepreneur’

For that blind first date, a half-century ago, the young doctor, Phillip Frost, showed up at Patricia Orr’s family house in suburban New York, with an unusual gift: a miniature mushroom garden.

In the 50 years since, Frost, the son of a shoe store owner, has gone on to amass a fortune of $2.4 billion, according to Forbes magazine, becoming the 188th wealthiest man in the United States by developing and selling pharmaceutical companies. Along the way, he and Patricia have become major philanthropists in Miami-Dade County and they’ve signed a pledge to give away at least $1 billion more.

“He’s a relentless guy,” says Miami banker Bill Allen, who’s know him for more than 40 years. “He’s not afraid to take risks. ... He knows the intimate details of the chemistry of products, and he’s the kind of guy who can examine 50 deals while eating a sandwich.”

CNBC’s Jim Cramer recently praised Frost’s “incredible track record” for developing companies, calling Frost’s latest endeavor, OPKO Health, a “very risky” investment while noting it could offer huge gains under Obamacare.

But back in 1962, Patricia’s first impression was that Phil Frost was a bit of a nerd, finishing his medical internship with a strong interest in research — including mushrooms. She figured an academic career loomed.

“My mother was very impressed,” recalls Patricia, not so much by the M.D. behind Frost’s name but by the gift, something more serious than the usual flowers or candy. Serious was fine with Patricia, who was living at home while working toward a master’s degree in education at Columbia University. For their first date, they listened to a classical music concert.

Frost’s rise to riches may seem highly distinctive, but in an odd coincidence he has much in common with another prominent Miamian. Frost, 76, and car dealer Norman Braman, 80, both frequently appear on the Forbes list of wealthiest Americans. Both grew up in Philadelphia — Frost the son of a man who sold shoes, Braman son of a barber. Both are Jewish, well-known art collectors and philanthropists.

“He’s an entrepreneur’s entrepreneur,” says Braman. “We have a lot in common, coming from very poor families. But he went to Central High (a public school for exceptional students) and I was not qualified to go there.”

There are other differences. While Braman is voluble and highly visible in the causes he supports, Frost tends to be a reticent, almost shy speaker, given to careful pauses.

‘Lucky chances’

Told that a former colleague had called Frost “lucky,” Frost thought for a long moment. He could have cited many national business stories about his business acumen. Instead, he responded crisply: “I’ll be satisfied with lucky. I benefited from chance meetings.”

Frost spent his first years living above the shoe shop within an Italian market in South Philly. His two brothers were 15 and 16 years older. “I was an afterthought.”

The family was religiously observant, and Frost recalls his father singing him songs in Yiddish when he was small. He lived at home while attending the University of Pennsylvania, except for a year abroad in France. He took many science courses, but his major was French literature.

CrimeWatch: Two email scams you shouldn’t fall for

This week I am going to share with you some scam emails that are going around. People are falling for them, but many could have been avoided with some common sense. If you get an email like the one below, please call the person before sending cash, which many have done and have lost their money.

Caught out of the country

Omg!! I’m writing this with tears in my eyes, my family and I came down here to Perth, Scotland, in United Kingdom for a short vacation unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed, all cash, credit card and cell were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our passports with us. We’ve been to the embassy and the police here but they’re not helping issues at all and our flight leaves in less than 19 hours from now, but we’re having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won’t let us leave until we settle the bills, I’m freaked out at the moment.

Sandy scams

Dear Friend, in light of what happened in the Northeast, here is a great opportunity for you to help and make some money. FEMA needs clean-up crews for South Jersey. It’s $1,000 for seven days, hotel and food included. Call this number... [The fraudster’s number would be here.] We will contact you as soon as possible. Thank you for applying.

The latter is a scam that is truly deplorable, but due to the kind hearts of many, they have fallen for it and have given their social security number, date of birth and other information that probably will be used in identity theft. Here the first thing one should have done is gone to the FEMA sight to see if it’s true.

The above scams were emailed to me from several readers, so please be careful, and as I always say, learn to use the “delete” key because if it involves money you have to dish out, it’s a scam.

Assault weapons

Now on to a subject that we should all be adamant about, and that is the murders that have been caused by assault weapons this past year.

On Sept. 13, 2004, the federal assault weapons ban expired. This ban was put in place in 1994, and outlawed 19 types of military-style assault weapons. A clause directed that the ban expire unless Congress specifically reauthorized it, and our congressional leaders did not. Shame on them! These are the consequences we are now seeing across the country. As stated by many in the law-enforcement community, these weapons are nothing more than “cop-killer guns”.

I always tell you that we need to get involved, we need to be part of our community, and we must demand that our community be a safe place to live. Therefore I ask you to please contact your representatives in Congress and ask them to support this ban. I truly believe that the killing of 20 little children should be sufficient for our congressional leaders to take the appropriate action. If you don’t know who your House member is, go to www.house.gov/representatives/find and you can find your representative.

Barnes & Noble sells fewer Nooks, retail revenue falls

(Reuters) – Barnes & Noble Inc’s Nook unit reported weak holiday season numbers on Thursday as it sold fewer e-readers and tablets at its own stores, and its e-books sales growth slowed, raising questions about the future of its digital business.

The Nook, launched in 2009 to compete with Amazon.com Inc‘s market-leading Kindle, has been the cornerstone of Barnes & Noble‘s strategy to counter the shift by many book readers to digital books. Early growth attracted a big investment last year from Microsoft Corp.

And last week, British education and media publisher Pearson Plc said it would take a 5 percent stake in Barnes & Noble‘s Nook Media unit, which also includes its college bookstore chain, giving it a $ 1.8 billion value, about double the company’s value as a whole.

But questions swirled about whether it is worth that much, after the retailer said that the Nook segment’s revenue fell 12.6 percent from a year earlier during the nine weeks ended December 29, hurt by lower unit sales and prices.

Sales of digital content like e-books and magazines rose 13.1 percent during the holidays, a much slower pace than the 38 percent gain last quarter and 113 percent in the 2011 holiday season, suggesting Barnes & Noble is having trouble holding on to its 25-30 percent share of the U.S. e-books market.

“We are way beyond the point where you should see content sales accelerate,” Morningstar analyst Peter Wahlstrom told Reuters. “That hasn’t materialized and that’s concerning.”

The numbers were all the more disappointing given that in late November, Barnes & Noble had told investors Nook device sales doubled over the Black Friday weekend, which follows Thanksgiving and kicks off the holiday season in earnest.

That suggests the rest of season was a debacle, analysts said, and Chief Executive William Lynch said in a statement that Barnes & Noble is “examining the root cause” of the shortfall and will adjust its strategy.

“The investment question for Barnes & Noble in 2013 is the Nook‘s staying power as a legitimate tablet device,” Credit Suisse analyst Gary Balter wrote in the note, predicting the retailer will face stiffer competition this year from the likes of Apple Inc and Google Inc, since tablets now have improved functions that make them more appealing to book readers.

The drop in Nook sales came despite the launch of two well-reviewed high-definition Nook tablets in October and promotions at large chains like Wal-Mart Stores Inc and Target Corp, both of which stopped selling Kindles last year.

Despite the holiday results, Barnes & Noble still expects Nook Media sales of $ 3 billion this fiscal year, keeping a forecast it gave in October.

That steady forecast helped lift shares 2.6 percent to $ 14.88 in morning trading.

The company will report full quarterly results in late February.

The results follow a warning from Barnes & Noble in a filing last week that holiday sales would come in below its expectations. The warning erased most of the gains in its share price that followed the news of Pearson’s investment.

FEWER VISITORS IN STORES

Compounding Barnes & Noble‘s troubles, fewer shoppers came into its bookstores during the Christmas period.

Barnes & Noble, which had enjoyed a sales bump after onetime rival Borders Group liquidated in 2011, reported a 10.9 percent decrease in sales at its bookstores and on its website over the holiday period.

Sales at stores open at least 15 months fell 3.1 percent, excluding Nook products, despite the benefit of some store closings — Barnes & Noble operates 689 bookstores, 14 fewer than a year ago.

“The Borders tailwind is over,” Morningstar’s Wahlstrom said.
